Luminous Washi Lanterns
The Japan Society
As part of a Rhode Island School of Design team I took part in designing the installation Luminous Paper Lanterns with instructor Aki Ishida, an architect based in NYC. It was installed at Japan Society's earth quake relief event CONCERT FOR JAPAN on April 9, 2011. Inspired by traditional washi paper lanterns typically found at Japanese festivals, the collective piece grew over the course of the day as the visitors wrote earthquake relief wishes on paper and contributed to the making of the work in Japan Society’s sky-lit lobby. The event was attended by over 2,400 guests in one day, and remained on display for six additional weeks.
